(ITA): Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea è lieta di presentare Sogno Lucido, la mostra personale dell’artista italiano 108, a cura di Michela D’Acquisto. 

Dopo anni durante i quali 108 aveva affidato le sue forme essenziali esclusivamente al nero, in occasione della nuova mostra negli spazi della galleria l’artista ritorna all’uso del colore: si tratta di un’evoluzione istintiva che lo vede non più soltanto come un’esigua componente razionale in gran parte assorbita dall’irrazionalità preponderante delle sue macchie scure, ma che adesso ne rivaluta le qualità sensibili capaci di avvicinare la realtà alla sfera spirituale, in un processo fortemente ispirato agli scritti di Huxley riguardanti la percezione e alla teoria sui colori di Kandinskij. Astratti ma organici, questi lavori si sottraggono alle leggi della geometria e scaturiscono dal caso e dalle ripetizioni che governano la natura; concisi e tuttavia perfettamente eloquenti, riflettono anche formalmente la dualità della loro essenza, in quanto il nero è contemporaneamente plenitudine e vuoto, e in più «esteriormente è il colore con minor suono: su uno sfondo nero qualsiasi colore, anche se ha un suono flebile, sembra forte e preciso». Attraverso un approccio assimilabile a quello automatico utilizzato dai surrealisti o, ancora meglio, da medium e sciamani, 108 abbandona il controllo della ragione e rimette interamente all’inconscio la sua onnicomprensiva pratica artistica, che comprende e concilia in sé molteplici suggestioni – su tutte, le avanguardie del Novecento, i culti primordiali e le tradizioni popolari del Piemonte delle sue origini, le culture e le religioni orientali – ma anche la sua vita quotidiana e l’assoluta necessità di trascenderla. Come in un rituale privato, o come nel corso di un sogno lucido – in cui si è consapevoli di stare sognando e diventa quindi possibile controllarne la narrativa – tramite la sua arte 108 inventa e plasma la realtà a lui circostante, offrendo uno sguardo privilegiato sulla dimensione onirica che sempre traspare dalle sue opere.

(ENG): Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea is proud to present Sogno Lucido, the solo exhibition of the Italian artist 108, curated by Michela D'Acquisto. 

 After years during which 108 had entrusted his essential shapes exclusively to black, on the occasion of the new exhibition in the gallery's spaces the artist returns to the use of color: it's an instinctive evolution that sees it no longer only as a small rational component largely absorbed by the preponderant irrationality of his dark spots, but which now re-evaluates its sensitive qualities capable of bringing reality closer to the spiritual sphere, in a process strongly inspired by Huxley's writings concerning perception and by Kandinsky's color theory. Abstract but organic, these works avoid the laws of geometry and arise from chance and from the repetitions that govern nature; concise and yet perfectly eloquent, they also formally reflect the duality of their essence, as black is at the same time plenitude and emptiness, and in addition «it's externally the most toneless color, against which all other colors, even the weakest, sound stronger and more precise». Through an approach similar to the automatic one employed by surrealists or, even better, by mediums and shamans, 108 abandons the control of reason and entirely refers to the unconscious his all-encompassing artistic practice, which includes and combines various suggestions – above all, the Twentieth century avant-gardes, the primordial cults and popular traditions of his Piedmont, Eastern cultures and religions – but also his daily life and the absolute need to transcend it. As in a private ritual, or as during a lucid dream – in which one is aware that one is dreaming and therefore it becomes possible to control its narrative – through his art 108 invents and molds his surrounding reality, offering a privileged view on the dreamlike dimension that always shines through his works. On show: paintings, a site-specific installation, and works on paper.

BIOGRAPHY

108

1978: Born in Alessandria, northern Italy.

1994-1996: Private artistic studies.

1997-2006: Studied at Politecnico di Milano.

2006 winter solstice: dec 21th 2006 - Graduated in Design.


He started to draw very young and in the earlie 90's as a kid he wrote the first tags on the walls of his hometown. After years spent to paint only letters, at the end of the millenium, influenced by writers as Stak and a lot of non-graffiti art he has moved from working in traditional graffiti art to painting large and mysterious figures that invade public spaces. He was one of the first writers to use numbers instead of letters for his name and his firsts works known by people, of the experimental period, are enigmatic “blob”-like yellow shapes and it’s his strong intention to make visual chaos. From Alessandria his shapes appear in Milano, Ginevra, Parigi, Berlino, Londra, New york, San Francisco, Reykjavik, Roma, Zaragoza, Amsterdam... His new works are labyrinths, dead trees, dark experimental music, videos, 3D objects and installations but especially black and gloomy shapes. In 2004 he was invited to Nusign 2.4 in Paris the first international exhibition about European Post Graffiti, in Zaragoza for Segundo end Tercer Asalto and in 2007 in Venezia Arsenale for the exhibition called Walls during the Biennale 2007. During March 2008 he was invited to join Nomadaz in Los Angeles with Eltono, Dem, Microbo and other artists to represent Europe in the U.S.A.
